William Trindle came to America from (Wales, Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man) with his two older brothers in an as yet undisclosed year. William was still underage so the two brothers left him in an undisclosed city and went on to further adventures.
I find this story fascinating in the Trindle genealogy, not because it is an uncommon tale but because it is told thru many lines always about a William but the place of origin, destination, and time frame change. There is no telling for sure where the story belongs.
Over the years Trindle researchers have shared stories with limited research. Only as we started doing extensive census and pre-census research have family lines started to come together.
I do admire the research of Helen Trindle. She refused to make connections that were not proven, instead gathering information and presenting through her newsletter. Unfortunately, Helen's original research has gone missing, but at least there are the newsletters and the collections she left in various libraries.
Most prevalent of the Williams to which the story is attached is William Trindle bn abt 1709 died 1874 in Trindle Springs, Pennsylvania. This is the William that everyone strives to find a connection to as his life is relatively well documented. But, we do not know his country of origin or the date of his arrival in Philadelphia. Supposedly he was apprenticed to a tailor there, but I have not found the records to prove this.
It seems likely that William had brothers as there is a John Trindle Sr. in Cumberland County, PA at a time when John the son of William was still young.
A second William that came with the story attached is William Wesley Trindal born 1802 in New Jersey. Now this William comes with the further complication of the following note....
"Our Great Grandpa William Wesley Trindal sent to England money for our Great Grandma Harriet Spaulding to return to the United States. This was shortly after his first wife Agnes (McCurdy) Trindal died (1851). He remarried to Harriet a few months later in 1851. He and his first wife had 12 offsprings, while he and our great grandma had 10 offsprings." 1987 Lucy Bolser
Problems....Well, although Agnes McCurdy died in 1849 (not 1851), William is listed with his son William in Indiana County PA in 1860. This presents a bit of a problem with the listing in 1860 with Harriet in Wisconsin. Further complications are introduced by the story written in "The Ligonier ECHO" issue of 3 February 1892: OLD-TIME RECOLLECTIONS No. XXVII. by Francis McConaughy, "A Neighbor"
The account states that Agnes (Nancy) died young when she was in fact her tombstone gives her age as 65.
That account goes on "Of this number William Trindle is a representative and has a pleasant home on section 32, West Point township. He comes of Scotch ancestry, the family having been founded in America by his grandfather, William Trindle, and his two brothers, Andrew and John, who crossed the Atlantic and settled in Pennsylvania. John, who remained single, secured a position in connection with government surveys and at the time of his death left a large fortune, but the family could not establish a claim to it ; for the records of his two brothers had been destroyed."
Are the two men the same, well they could be, but I sincerely doubt it. William of Wisconsin was supposedly born in 1802, William of West Point Township was born by 1795. He first bought land in 1815 which suggests a birth by 1794. William of PA supposedly died (no sources) in 1864, William in Wisconsin was still alive in 1880 (no death sources to date). There is nothing that absolutely contradicts them being the same person as we know the census can be inaccurate.
The Ligonier added names for the two brothers, John and Andrew. And the back story for John. John's back story is of interest as we know there was another John in Cumberland County. If, however, he had no children then who is John in Westmoreland County. The only records likely to help us solve these problems are probates. I keep hoping they exist and that I will eventually find them.

Jessie Trindle
Living in Richmond, Indiana in 1896 we find Jessie Trindle. It is reported that she is visiting her grandparents Dr. and Mrs. Taylor in Cambridge City.
Is Jessie the daughter of William Hamilton (Billy) Trindle, the Sheriff of Wayne County. If so we have a question that arises. William Hamilton Trindle and Ida Viola Hand were married in 1878 and still married in 1896. Had Ida been married previously? Was her mother remarried? In otherwords who are the Taylors?
Some other newsclipping from the Cambridge City Tribune about Billy Trindle and family.

John Trindle probate 1731

Unfortunately the wills listed in the Will Registers do not exist and to date I have found no connections between John and William...but it is a quest to keep in mind.

John Trindle (Troendle)

John Trindle, who was born in Germany abt 1850, died 29 Sep 1893 in Philadelphia. He was married.
Amelia (Boehl) Trindle who is listed in the 1900 census is the widow of James M. Trindle, rather than John as evidenced by her children's birth records. No other "Trindle" widows are found in Philadelphia in 1900, so John's widow either moved, remarried or died.
John was buried in Saint Peters German Redemptionist Fathers Cemetery. No other Trindles were found in available online records buried there. The cemetery burial register spelt the name Troendle, no other Troendle records were found on FindAGrave.
The plot book for the cemetery gave more, listing John, Peter and Joseph as the Troendle brothers. Joseph died in 1918. There was a fourth burial in plot 148 Sec F (or rather double burial) that of Joseph and Helen Pomykacz. Might Helen be the wife of one of the brothers, or a sister? And who is Anna May Tracy?
This is a good example of why one should never trust that the "spelling" found is the correct one. The original record found, the burial card for John Trindle is the only one found with that spelling but expanding the search gives at least two brothers for John and clues to finding more family links.

Glen Trindle - Chicken Thief
Moberly Monitor Index (Moberly, Missouri) didn't quite get their act together in reporting the arrest of Glen Trindle for the theft of 22 chickens in 1931. On January 17 they reported ...

and on January 19 followed up with

On January 20 they retracted the report of the day before

and the next day went back to square one, this time skewing the name of his companion to read Howard Trindle rather than Howard Roberts.
Who is Glen Trindle? He would have been born about 1908.
I haven't found him in any census records with any spelling of the last name.. I'm guessing his legal name is not Glen but something else, but what?
I love newspapers, they solve many problems. But, they create new ones as well.

Edward P Trindle
Lincoln State Journal
28 Aug 1924

I have been unable to find Edward P. Trindle in Nebraska or anywhere else for that matter in any records except this newspaper article.
There is an Edmund Trindel found in Dawson, Nebraska in 1920, but Dawson is 303 miles west of Bignell and in 1930 the family is found further west in Idaho. No middle initial is found in any of the records I've found for Edmund. (Edmund is the son of Alexander Trindel and Eliza Colvin, grandson of Alexander Trindel and Margarethe Kastor)
Then there is Ed Trindle, son of Robert T Trindle and Margaret A. He is last found in Catoosa, Georgia in 1910.
Edward L. Trindle bn 1870 in Missouri is last found in 1910 in Missouri.
All clues are welcome!

Theron Trindle
The Great Register of Sutter County, California lists Theron Trindle in Yuba City in 1928. Is this the same Theron Trindal, the son of Stephen Davis Trindal, who was living in Santa Cruz from about 1900 until his death in 1939. If so who is Opal? Theron in Santa Cruz was married to Hattie Robinson in 1900 and according to the 1930 census was still married.
If it is not the son of Stephen then who is he? I haven't found any other Theron's in records and it is an unusual name. It is interesting to note, however, that this record gives the Trindle spelling, whereas the 1930 census and most other records are Trindal.

Philadelphia Connections
Jennie was one of six known children of Robert and Kate (Katherine McCool). Her sister Maggie lived only one day (15-16 Jun 1888) and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery. There were three sons: James Lawson, John Keene and Alvin J. and one daughter Lydia who lived to adulthood.
Robert Trindle was the son of John Keene Trindle and Isabella Lamon. We do not know the parentage of John, but it seems possible that he is the grandson of Thomas Trindal who is found in the Philadelphia Census in 1830 age 60-70. There is a Joseph Trindle listed in the census in Philadelphia in 1840 with nine people in the household, but no males are young enough to be John Keene if he was in fact born in 1833. The males in the household were all over 20.
So, we are left wondering. John was, according to all known records, born in Pennsylvania. Descendants in his family state he was born in Cork, Ireland. That seems most likely to go back another generation or two. Although there are many John Trindles found in my records, none could be a match for John Keene. Who are his parents? Is there an Irish connection?

Allentown

I do not have any other information on the Trindle family in Allentown which is in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Who are they and what happened with what looks like an interesting case?
I found it interesting that the names changed over a two day period. Which in fact are the right spellings?

Susan Trindle and James W Wilson
![]() |
The Daily Iowa Capitol (Des Moines) 20 Oct 1899 |
Susan Trindle, the wife of George Ewing was visiting her daughter Florence Viola. Florence had married James W. Wilson on 16 Dec 1882 in Dallas County, IA.
Before finding this notice in the newspaper I had trouble finding the Wilsons in the census. I subsequently found them in 1900 in the township of Walnut in Polk county.
Then...a reminder that I should never take the research of others as given fact. I had been told by a descendant of George Ewing that the Wilsons had a son James Roy, a son Fred and a daughter who died in infancy. I was quite intrigued to find that Frederick had a twin brother, Floyd, who was living in 1900 and still living in 1910. I have more homework to do on this family.
If anyone has information (with sources) I would love to see it.

Coincidence or Connection
![]() |
The Kearney /Daily Hub 22 Dec 1891 |
Ira Irvin Trindle and Flora Eva Trindle Pitzer, wife of George Amos, were two of the children of John Heaston Trindle. The question is, why were they in Kearney, which was the home of John Frank Trindle and his brother George Washington Trindle.
Did they know each other, John Heaston was the son of Andrew, the son of Alexander, son of John, son of William of Trindle Springs. This lineage is complete.
John Frank was the son of James, son of William M,, son of William, who was most likely the son of John who might have been a brother of William of Trindle Springs. There are missing links in this lineage.
So the connection is most likely 4th cousin once removed. I have searched for a closer relative that Ira and Flora might have been visiting but so far have had no luck.
It seems the newspaper might cooperate and have a notice telling who, Ira and Flora, who lived in Van Meter, were visiting.

William H Trindle - Sheriff of Wayne County Indiana
Not everything is a puzzle. The 1880 census lists William as the sheriff of Wayne county. The following news-clippings add a bit more.
Hagerstown Exponent (Hagerstown IN) 12 Feb 1880 Thu p3 |
Hagerstown Exponent (Hagerstown IN) 4 Mar 1880 p 2 |
21 Hagerstown Exponent (Hagerstown IN) 11 Mar 1880 p3 |
21 Hagerstown Exponent (Hagerstown IN) 18 Mar 1880 p4 |
Hagerstown Exponent (Hagerstown IN) 8 Apr 1880 Th p2 |
So.. a question. It appears that William lost the election for sheriff, yet when the census was taken on 15 June he is listed as Sheriff and the prisoner's are listed with him. Was the newspaper wrong? Or was this only a partial report for the town of Hagerstown rather than for the whole county? Did the change of office take place after June 15?

Sorting out Trindles
Over the years many Trindle researchers have contributed to the files I've collected. Among the records that were confused were the children of John M and Mary Raymond Trindle and those of his brother Samuel Swan and Ann Coen Trindle.
The newspapers of 1873 help to sort them out.
I have just sent a request that these two children be unlinked from John M and relinked to Samuel Swan on FindAGrave.....
John also lost two children in their youth. Eleanora (Lonnie) died in April 1880 at the age of 14 and Frances Arbena died a month earlier at the age of 7.

Joseph Trindle in Wilmington, Ohio
The following newspaper articles do not link to any known family. All the articles take place within a three month period. With no 1890 census the hope of finding them in census records is diminished.
Joseph Goodhue Trindle was born in 1864 in Ohio, but he is listed as single in records in 1900 and later. I didn't find any other likely candidates for either Joseph or Maude and no Gardner's that connect to the family in that time and place.
